The way of the tank officer Joachim Senholdt
Reconnaissance Battalion 8 – Panzer Regiment 204 – I./Pz.Rgt. “Brandenburg”

For this book, the extensive original material of the tank soldier Joachim Senholdt was evaluated. He was a private at the beginning of the war and experienced the end of the Third Reich in 1945 as a first lieutenant. The authentic material was provided by the son and is rare because of its completeness. In the context of the documentation, it is therefore possible to draw an arc from the invasion of the Sudetenland at the end of 1938 to the end of the war in the Halbe Pocket in April 1945 and the subsequent flight to the west. It becomes unmistakably clear how the war became more and more brutal, cost more and more victims and became more and more hopeless.

The reader follows Joachim Senholdt on the invasion of the Sudetenland, takes part in the attack on Poland, rolls over the Belgian border in the Ardennes on May 10, 1940 and fights the Soviets with Senholdt’s tank regiment in the desolate, flat steppe landscape of the Kerch peninsula. One experiences the summer offensive of 1942 in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, the Soviet breakthrough in December 1942, which leads encirclement of Stalingrad, and the defeat of Senholdt’s division in winter of 1942/43.
In the end Senholdt fought as head of the assault gun company of the Panzer Regiment “Brandenburg” in April 1945 on the Oder front and in Pocket of Halbe. His week-long escape from the cauldron to the west, constantly pursued by the Soviets and constantly in danger of his life, represents the last part of the book. 280 photos, many of them unknown, as well as 35 coloured maps support the text.

A unique documentation that lets you feel the events of that time up close.
